Musicals - a theatrical musical form - are experiencing a surprising renaissance in the 21st century. The real golden age of the musical was in the twentieth century where the true Mecca of admirers of this genre was in New York's Broadway. It was here that the most important productions were made, the successes of which were often so huge that they quickly made their way to the cinema screen. Audiences were fascinated by the form in which actors not only sang, combining opera-like singing with entirely entertaining ways of singing, but also often danced and tapped.
Although this genre is perceived as much lighter and more entertaining than the opera, innovative composers such as Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin boldly reached for it. Many musical songs have become standards arranged by jazz legends, e.g. "Maria" (from Bernstein's "West Side Story"), "My Favorite Things" (from "The Sound of Music" by Richard Rodgers) or "Oh, Lady be Good!” (Gershwin from the musical of the same title).
