On Easter Monday, we heard the sad news of the sudden and unexpected death of Professor Marcin Błażewicz, an outstanding composer who chaired the jury of this year's 1st Mieczysław Karłowicz International Composers' Competition.

In 1974-75 he studied philosophy at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw, and then – in 1977-82 – composition with Marian Borkowski at the Warsaw Academy of Music, receiving a diploma with honors. In addition, he participated in international composition courses led by François-Bernard Mâche (Pécs in 1980). As the scholarshipholder of the French government, he participated in composition courses conducted by Iannis Xenakis (Salzburg and Delphi in 1985) and Olivier Messiaen (in 1987).
He had the title of the fullprofessor and taught composition at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. The large group of hisstudentsincludedsuchnames as Dariusz Przybylski, Eunho Chang, KrzesimirDębski and IgnacyZalewski.
Marcin Błażewicz had been promoting the musical culture for many years. He organizedover 200 concerts devoted mainly to contemporary music. He was the organizer and theartisticdirector of the International Forum of New Music in Warsaw (1983-87) and the artistic director of the International Festival "Jeunesses Musicales" (Częstochowa, 1986; Warsaw, 1990).
He was also the chairman of the classical music section of ZAiKS (2006-2013) and the treasurer of ZAiKS (since 2006). He was also a member of the Percussion Art Society, the Polish section of "Jeunesses Musicales" and the Polish Composers' Union.
